St Francis Gorton Honour Roll

May we always remember the sacrifices these men made and pray they did not die in vain. It is up to us, the living and descendants of these soldiers, to make sure their deaths are remembered, and the reason for their deaths. Some made it home and died years later, but still carried the scars of war.

The 10th Battalion went to France in July 1915 and moved almost immediately into the notorious bloody YPRES SALIENT. In 1916, it took part in the first ten days of continuous fighting on the SOMME, returning for a second time into the grim battle in August and yet a third time in October/November. In 1917 the Battalion fought magnificently throughout the 2nd Battle of YPRES suffering further heavy casualties and like the 9th Battalion continued in the forefront of battle followed by the German breakthrough in the Spring of 1918.

James enlisted on 3rd May 1904 aged 19 - he was living at 2 Albert Place West Gorton and he was a labourer
He landed in FRANCE 5th August 1914 - ready for the fight ... and he got it  .... for long hours during the morning of 26 August 1914 during the BATTLE of LE
CATEAU - the British force, notably the field artillery, held overwhelming numbers of the enemy at bay and inflicted severe losses. British tactics were similar to those at MONS - the infantry produced intensive and accurate rifle fire, while the field artillery fired air-bursting shrapnel rounds on the unprotected enemy.
Private 8804 William Buckley of 2nd battalion Manchester Regiment - after being wounded himself by shellfire at LE CATEAU - helped his wounded pal Private James Aspin to the roadside ... but unfortunately James died -
the La Ferte-sous-Jouarre Memorial commemorates nearly 4,000 officers and men of the British Expeditionary Force who died in August, September and the early part of October 1914 and who have no known grave

Son of Alfred Burns, of 109 Margaret St. West Gorton

21-3-1918 Manchester Hill

During the last moments at the hill,L/Cpl John Burns a bomber in C.coy was taken prisoner along with the rest of the defenders - except a lone machine gunner, who was still making a last stand on the lip of the quarry - until he was finally silenced - the survivors were processed through the German POW system and for most of them sent to the POW camp at Dulmen in Westphalia ..... apart from their pay books and letters and photos - everything else was taken from them.
It was quite a while before they started to receive any parcels and as time went on L/Cpl Burns began to lose heart - he finally caught influenza, he refused all food and was unable to eat anything - the Germans had no medicines to give him and he was taken to hospital - where he died 36 hours later on 28th July 1918.
He was buried in Weidenau cemetery,in July 1923 his family received a letter from the Imperial War Graves Commission to inform them that the bodies of British soldiers buried in Weidenau cemetery had been disinterred and re-buried in South Cemetery Cologne, Rhine Province, the re-burials were carefully and reverently carried out.

On 9-4-1919 John Burns intended wife,Miss Annie Smith of 98 South St, Openshaw, received a letter from Pte Vincent A Watson, who told her of the final days of Johns life.
